Kenya McQueen (Sanaa Lathan) is a successful black lawyer, though a bit high strung, who has been unlucky in love until she meets Brian Kelly (Simon Baker), a carefree, white gardener/architect for one of her wealthy friends. They have a strange attraction from the beginning but Kenya lets racial issues get in the way. Brian does his best to convince Kenya that if she ignores what everyone else says and follows her heart that they both could be very happy. Instead Kenya breaks off the relationship and begins dating a successful black man to appease her friends and family. However, she can't bring herself to have the same strong feelings for this man as she has for Brian. So she must decide which man she wants to make a life with.
